The birthplace of President Houari Boumediene

The family home of Mohamed Boukharrouba (alias Houari Boumedienne) born in 1932 and deceased in Algiers in 1978, son of Brahim Boukharouba and Tounès Bouhzile is located at Djebel El-Arâara in Douar Beni Addi, opposite Djebel Debagh, in the municipality of Medjez Ammar, District of Ain H’ssaïnia. The house consists of two rooms built of stone and covered with tiles. It was transformed into a museum and attached to the Moudjahid Museum of Guelma, after its restoration and the development of its surroundings, and the completion of a memorial and a room where various objects of collection and photos are exhibited in honour of the person and of his well filled career.

The house receives a large and growing number of visitors, both individuals and groups, from different regions of the country, because of the attachment of Algerians to this leader during his reign when Algeria was at its political peak and had embarked on the road to economic take-off and social transformation. He was a symbol of the Non-Aligned Movement. He was known for his strong positions on Arab and humanitarian issues and his defence of the rights of peoples to self-determination. He is the author of the famous slogan “We stand with the Palestinian people, oppressor or oppressed”.

In his honour: many places, institutions and public facilities bear his name, including

– The municipality of Houari Boumediene (the municipality where he was born “Ain H’sainia).

– Houari Boumediene International Airport in Algiers.

– University of Sciences and Technology Houari Boumediene, Bab Ezzouar, Algiers.

In his honour, a bronze statue has been erected in the centre of the city of Guelma, wearing his Burnous . There is also an exhibition of photographs and collectors’ items in his honour in the Province Museum of the Moudjahid, tracing his life and career.
