El-Atik Mosque “ibn khaldoune”

The El-Atik Mosque (Ibn Khaldun) is located in the centre of the city of Guelma, in the rue Malika Bouzit. It is one of the oldest mosques in Guelma. It is considered one of the historical vestiges of the city of Guelma. It combines the Ottoman and French periods. Its construction began in 1824 under the mandate of Ahmed Bey at the end of the Ottoman era. It did not enter into service until 1852.

It was recently restored. It is an engineering masterpiece with a unique design that combines beauty and simplicity. Polished stones with rectangular shapes and precise engineering techniques were used in its construction. The mosque contains beautiful artistic decorations and a circular minaret of pink marble, about 7 metres high. The mosque occupies an area of 1,387 square meters and includes rooms for men and women and a section for teaching the Holy Quran. The mosque also contains a large underground room that was used as a storehouse in which supplies were placed during the liberation revolution.
