CAVE OF GHAR DJEMÂA

This marvellous cave is located in the municipality of Bouhamdane, at an altitude of 1,000 metres. It is a real masterpiece of nature because of the curiosities it offers and the secrets it hides. It was discovered in 1867.

It is a very vast and marvellous cave of stalagmites and stalactites opening in the northern flank of the Djebel Taya with dimensions of 1,200 m long and 200 m deep. It is made up of several passages and corridors with more than 1800 units of bones, ruins and engravings dating back to the 3rd century.

The cave was inhabited by prehistoric man. In Roman times, it was a kind of sanctuary that the inhabitants of Tاbilis went on pilgrimage to in the spring to pray and make offerings.

During the Algerian War of Independence, the cave served as a refuge and command centre for the ALN.

The charm of the place and its historical value have made it a destination for visitors from different parts of the country, especially young people keen on adventure and exploration.
